For example, tax free shopping is as if the Value Added Tax - 17.5% - has not been added.

Although passengers may be required to pay tax on purchases when arriving at their final destination if outside of the EU. Or may be required to pay tax when bringing the purchases back into the UK.

NB - goods that have duty paid, or goods from newsagents, bookstores, pharmacies are excluded from any additional tax.

Customs Duty Free Allowances ...

Use the following Newcastle information on duty free amounts, and tax free shopping - which is dependant on the final destination.

The duty free allowances, when travelling into the UK, from the EU, below can be brought into the Country without paying any additional tax or duty:
  • 250g of tobacco, 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos

  • 2 Litres of still table wine, sparking or fortified wine, 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or other liqueurs

  • 250ml of toilet water and 50g of perfume

  • Souvenirs and other goods up to the value of £145

  • Duty and tax paid goods in the EU are unlimited

Goods that are being brought into the UK that have had tax paid on them require not additional tax or duty to be paid.

Any goods, especially tobacco or alcohol, brought into the UK must strictly be transported by the passenger whose goods they are, and for their own personal use (i.e. own consumption and gifts).

Goods being brought into the UK for resale, or for payment of any kind, will be viewed as for a commercial purpose.

Should Customs Officers suspect that goods are being imported for a commercial purpose then a series of questions will be asked and checks made. Such as - what are the type and quantity of goods that have been bought, how much alcohol and tobacco the passenger normally consumes, why the goods were bought, how much was paid and how often the passenger travels?

Also taken into account is whether the goods look as though they have been deliberately concealed, or whether goods are on visible display.

Customs are likely to suspect if the following quantities are being imported:
  • 90 Litres of wine
  • 110 Litres of beer
  • 10 Litres of spirits
  • 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
  • 3,200 cigarettes
  • 3kg tobacco
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 200 cigars
Any goods that are considered to be being imported for commercial use will be seized and not returned.  The same applies should goods be found actually being sold. It is considered a serious offence by Customs and serves a maximum seven year sentence in jail.

Many Countries have their own tobacco and alcohol laws, with some requiring you to carry documentation covering the goods. If planning on purchasing large amounts of tobacco or alcohol check with the Country’s Authorities before purchasing.

On arrival back into the UK, passengers must carry through Customs the exact amount of goods that they have purchased, for themselves.

NOTE: The following Countries have their own rules for cigarettes and some tobacco products:

  Special Restrictions
  Czech Republic 200 cigarettes, or
250g smoking tobacco, or
50 cigars, or
100 cigarillos
  Estonia 200 cigarettes, or
250g of smoking tobacco*
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia & Slovenia 200 Cigarettes*
* From these Countries, there is no limit on other tobacco products as long as they are for the passengers own consumption.
