Following the Government White Paper, Newcastle International Airport has been working on a master plan for the airport development, which outlines how the airport will expand between now and 2016.
Newcastle International currently serves over 3.8 million passengers a year, and the master plan predicts that this number will rise to approximately 9.5 million passengers a year by 2016.
Looking to the future, the developments are likely to include further developments to the north, east and south of the terminal building, additional pier capacity, car parking, the runway and taxi corridor, and more.
Air and noise pollution is therefore a concern for the local Newcastle community. The proposed airport expansion will be supported with an environmental appraisal that identifies the main impacts such as noise, air quality, landscape, agriculture, heritage, etc.
The airport expansion however will also create more jobs, act as a hub for regular flyers and also improve Newcastle’s tourist trade, and so could have a positive effect on the local house prices. |
