Newcastle International Airport began life as a grass runway and facilities costing just £35,000 in 1935.

By the 1950’s, Newcastle Airport had started to offer package holidays that boosted annual passenger numbers to 5,500. 

A dramatic increase of the market in the 1960’s led to investment required for the North East airport.

In 1970, the Airport was upgrade to Regional International Airport Status by the Government, and passenger figures increased to 700,000 per year.

Major redevelopments took place in the 1980’s which again resulted in an increase of passenger numbers, this time to 1.24 million.

1994 saw further redevelopments and improvements to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

Over the last decade, the Airport has grown to accommodate 3.8 million passengers per year.
