Expert Travel Tips ...

These travel tips have been prepare for passengers travelling from Newcastle Airport - expert advice on securing your home, before you travel, staying comfy during your flight and general helpful hints and guidelines.

Getting to Newcastle ...

Located 10 miles North west of Newcastle-Upon Tyne the airport is easily accessible by road, rail, taxi and bus from the city.

Use the ‘Getting to the Airport’ section for more information on travelling to Newcastle by: The main car park is in front of the terminal building, offering short and long stay car parking.

Airport Parking ...

Choose from a variety of car parking when flying from Newcastle Airport - whether it's length of stay, budget or level of service required.

Choose the short stay car park if dropping off or collecting passengers. Or for short duration trips. Alternatively, the short stay car park is recommended for stays of up to five hours if visiting the airport just for the day.

Those travellers away for longer than a few days should choose one of the long stay parking options:

* a long stay parking with a transfer to the airport terminal

* or meet and greet valet parking.

Valet meet and greet parking is hugely convenient when passengers want to get into the airport quickly (and even quicker on their return).
Simply leave the car with the meet and greet Rep who will be waiting at the airport terminal, leaving passengers able to go straight into the terminal.  The vehicle will be stored in a secure parking compound, then ready and waiting outside the terminal on the passenger's return.

A perfect parking choice for passengers needing a stress-free start - and finish - to their holiday or business trip.  Ideal for families with young children, business travellers, people with heavy sports equipment and people with special needs.

Meet and greet parking costs around £83 for one week and around £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose.

Pre-booking valet parking is advised to ensure availability.

Alternatively choose the Fast Track parking option. The under cover parking area is located in the short stay car park and offers a quick link to the terminal.  Prices start from around £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof.

Arriving At Newcastle Airport ...

It is advised that once you enter the airport terminal you proceed to Check-in for your flight and deposit your hold baggage so that it can be loaded onto the aircraft. Especially as security has increased considerably and so has the length of time it takes to check in.

The following check-in times are advise:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

When you arrive at check-in it's critical that you keep your main and hand luggage closely with you at all times. Do not let anyone else carry your bags for you, add anything to your bags for you to deliver for them, or such like.

In the name of security you must not offer, or agree to look after, another passenger's luggage. Equally, you must never carry anything else onto the plane for another passenger.  You must alert a member of the airport staff if you notice any unattended packages or are approached by strangers to look after bags etc.

Once moved through to the departure lounge keep an eye out on the digital display boards that will advertise the boarding gate your flight will be boarding from. Take note that at some of the larger airports it could take 30 minutes.

You can find more information on Airport Safety and Security within this Fly Guide.

Comfortable Flying ...

Long plane journeys can be uncomfortable and boring. Even more so if you are travelling with children and babies. Fear not, here are some suggestions on how to best prepare for making the flight more bearable for all concerned.

Think carefully about what you might actually need on the flight and be sure to pack it in your hand luggage, as even though it may seem obvious, if it's in your main luggage you won't be able to get it.

Think about any medication you or your family might need. Does anyone have a cold? Do you get travel sick - if so pack your tablets or wristbands. What about a spare top and toothbrush to help freshen up. Pack some books, magazines or some music - even though entertainment is available on most flights what will you do if you don't like it or have seen the films before?

On-board food can be small so think about having something to eat before you board, or packing some snacks or light refreshments.

Many travellers find that the cabin pressure and the atmosphere causes swollen hands and feet, and dry skin. To avoid this you need to stay
hydrated by drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol. If you're prone to dry skin carry some moisturiser.

A warm jumper will keep you warm, or could act as a pillow if you want to try and get some sleep. Get yourself some earplugs too, and an eye mask - both aid sleep and fight off the aircraft noises.

Letting your feet move freely about brings relief to many passengers so kick off your shoes during the flight or pack some sandals to wear (these will also come in handy if you are arriving to a very hot Country).

Check out the great tips on comfortable flying in the section below.

DVT/Deep Vein Thrombosis is a very serious condition which is blood clotting deep in the veins of the legs. Evidence suggests that long-haul flights, as passengers have little or no exercise, may increase the risk of developing DVT.

Get up and walk around as much as you can. Even by doing some simple leg stretches helps to get the blood circulating.

Further information on DVT like who is more at risk and how you can help prevent it is available on the Department of Health website - click here.

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade Think about asking for an upgrade to Business Class or First Class.
  2. Front Row Seats When checking in ask for a front row seat or one by an emergency exit as these have extra leg room.
3. Aisle Seats Aisle seats will also give one of you in your party a little bit more leg room to stretch out - if you are successful in getting an aisle seat make sure you all take it in turns. Plus these seats make life much easier to get out and about in the cabin.
4. Pillow When you board ask the Cabin crew to bring you a pillow and a blanket. Or you can buy a blow up pillow (that are also great to use on the beach).
5. Painful Ears If you suffer from painful ears think about buying specialist ear plugs like Earplanes, that equalise the air pressure on each side of the ear drum.
6. Dehydration Dehydration will make your flight very uncomfortable so drink lots and avoid alcohol. It's worth taking on board a bottle of water.
7. Snacks Pack plenty of snacks and finger foods for the whole family in case you get hungry or delayed.
8. Anxiety Flight anxiety is very unpleasant - try learning some breathing skills.  Some passengers find activities like crosswords can help take their mind of things.   Failing that, speak to your Doctor before you travel to see if they can recommend anything to calm your nerves.

Travelling with Children & Babies ...

If you forget anything, make sure it's not the things you are likely to need when travelling with children or babies.

Your children will need entertaining and amusing so include pens and colouring books, story books and games in your hand luggage. Whilst many airlines provide children with an in-flight entertainment packs you will still need some extra activities.

Babies need many things when flying - make sure you have packed baby food or formula milk - and more than you actually need in case of delays. Finger foods, nappies, dummy, spare clothes in case of emergencies, plenty of their favourite toys and a blanket from home to help them settle to sleep.

Make sure you've included warm clothes too, even if flying in the Summer, as it will get cold in the cabin.

Travelling with Disabilities / Special Needs ...

Disabled passengers will find that most airlines are well equipped to assist passengers with special needs. However, do check when booking your flight that any assistance is included in the price of the fare and that the airline are fully aware of your disabilities.

It may be that passengers in a wheelchair will be asked to transfer to an airline wheelchair.  Any passengers wishing to stay in their own wheelchair till boarding should check with the airline in advance of travel.

Do note that in large airports some of the boarding gates can be quite far away, therefore proceed to the gate in good time.

Airports do offer special assistance vehicles for passengers with disabilities. These should be pre-booked when and where possible.
