If you are considering taking your mobile phone on holiday, take a few minutes to read this guide on things you need to know when travelling with your mobile phone. Otherwise, you could risk getting on the wrong, and very expensive, tariff and your phone not working.

Taking Your Mobile Phone Abroad...

It's no wonder that so many of us take our mobile phones on holiday. It's a great way to stay in touch with your friends and family, but be careful that it doesn't cost you a small fortune.

You need to make sure you are on the right tariff, that your phone is 'International roaming' enabled and such like.

So read on, with our easy to use guide on travelling with your mobile phone.

Preparing To Take Your Mobile Phone On Holiday ...

Before travelling with your mobile phone contact your Network provider and ask/check the following unofficial information:

  • Check your phone is activated for 'International roaming' well in advance of travel as this can take up to 14 days.

  • Make sure your mobile phone abroad will work i.e. in America you'll need a tri-band handset.

  • Check the call rates for International roaming and if taking your mobile phone on holiday a while after you've checked, check again before you leave in case rates have gone up.

  • Ask if there are any deals available to you for International calls, and if there are any better deals relating specifically to the Country you are travelling to.

Using Your Mobile Phone A Lot ...

Check if your Network provider offers any tariffs that include cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee if you are travelling a lot as it may work out cheaper for you in the long run.

You could also consider using an alternative International SIM card.

The International SIM card replaces your regular SIM card for whilst you are away, allowing you to make and receive calls at a better rate. These are available in International airports and some UK retailers.

Or you can buy an International SIM card at SIM for Travel, by clicking this link:

Don't forget your electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger.

Using Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

To use your mobile phone abroad you simple turn the phone on as normal and your mobile will automatically lock itself into the local phone transmitter your Network provider has routed it to.

As you are aware, calls from abroad can be costly - this is because the mobile phone still behaves as if you were making the call from the UK. How? Well, say you were in France. You call your UK friend also in France. Your call, even though travelling just miles, is routed via the UK - a huge 1,800 miles! What's more, your UK French-based friend will also be charged to receive the call.

So carefully do your research and pick the best option for you - a revised tariff or a temporary International SIM card.

Emergency Numbers...

When travelling with your mobile phone make sure you add the following numbers to your telephone address book in the event of delays or emergencies:

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

  • Telephone number of the British Embassy

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Overseas Security ...

Keeping it separate from where you keep your mobile phone, make a note of your phone's IMIE/serial number. Also your own mobile phone number, along with the number of your Network provider's customer services department. It's also worth contacting your Network provider before travelling with your mobile phone to check if they need any additional unofficial information i.e. a password.

Then, if your mobile is lost or stolen you'll be able to contact your Network provider and block for phone immediately.

Take note that not all travel insurance policies include cover for lost, stolen or damaged mobile phones.
